The shape of a heart is called Inome-mon in Japanese and the motif is used as a decoration in many Japanese temples and shrines.

The shape is called Inome, or boar's eye, because of its resemblance to the eye of a boa. The Inome-mon pattern is believed to be a messenger from the Gods to protect us from bad luck, evil and also, fire.
